East/North Cork - Food Trail

- - -
A typical East/North Cork Trail might include...

- - -
Day 1

Meet at 12 noon for introduction, a light lunch and details of the itinerary.
---

Cork is recognised as the food capital of Ireland with its rugged coastline, rich land, delightful villages and towns and mild climate.

We head to East Cork and check in to the world-renowned Ballymaloe House run by Myrtle Allen. Darina Allen will meet us and take us to her cookery school The Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry where she will work with us for the afternoon making butter or preparing some mouth watering dishes. Darina is not only a brilliant teacher but believes in hands-on experience all the way. During the afternoon she will share her passion and philosophy about food with us and bring us on a tour of her organic herb and vegetable gardens.

Back to Ballymaloe House to relax and change before meeting for a pre-dinner drink and a fantastic dinner.

The restaurant has a food philosophy where using the highest quality ingredients is central to everything done at Ballymaloe. The dinner menu is a five course meal providing a choice of hot soups or cold starters, followed by a fish or paté course. Main course is a choice of fish, poultry or meat from our local butcher. A cheese board and desert trolley, followed by coffee or tea and petit fours completes the meal.

Day 2
Breakfast is a lovely affair in Ballymaloe house - fresh fruits, breads, organic eggs, bacon and anything else you fancy.

The English Market in Cork city is a magnet for all food lovers, and we will be guided through it by a leading Cork chef who will introduce us to people there, from butchers, to fishmongers, makers of cheese and country butter and everything else besides. Throughout the tour your guides will purchase the ingredients for a magnificent picnic lunch. You can join in or leave it to us, which ever you prefer.

A very grand picnic will be our lunchtime stop with wine from Cork based River Wines, fresh apple juice and freshly brewed coffee and tea will accompany all the goodies we purchased at the English market. This will be a memorable meal.

That afternoon we head to north Cork visiting some of the producers we met in the morning to see where they work and how they produce their honey, cheeses and/or organic vegetables. Dinner and accommodation tonight will be in the splendid country mansion Ballyvolane House surrounded by their farm, wooded gardens and lake. The welcoming Greene family will serve dinner at 8pm and we will meet at 7.30 for a pre-dinner drink in the drawing-room followed by a delicious dinner.

Day 3
Following breakfast we will visit a local diary which produces wonderful country butter, fromage frais and yogurt amongst other goodies. They will show us the farm and tell us how they developed their produce. Or - weather or season depending - we might do some foraging, or dig up a few potatoes with one of the best known and respected potato growers in the South.

We will finish with a superb lunch nearby, and have you back to the assembly point by 5pm
